The Digital Millennium
The screech claws at my eardrums every time my dialup modem connects. With less than half an hour to go for the new millennium, I am sending last minute emails to family and friends down south and abroad. Contemplating the early fireworks across the football pitch, today’s snapshots take ages to upload though; seconds seem an eternity with few minutes now to go for the end of this millennium. Still waiting for the photo attachment, I ponder what everyday life would look like in 2050 - how would information and communication technologies have evolved and shaped our future? ... New horizons – or the same four walls?
During this past week, I 've visited Woodlands and Astral Gardens in the U.K., watered and revived Bellis Lycaena in Arizona, and spotted Water Dragons, Lovebirds and Golden Dragons in Auckland. I added properties to my city portfolio, including a theatre and a furniture store and collected rents on my extensive housing stock. Phew! An exhausting schedule - and this is on top of running my successful restaurant, Andrea's Emporium, which currently has a top buzz rating. Impressed? Mobile phones; they’re a tool we all use every day and over the past twenty five years of development, they have revolutionised the world we live in. In the western world we have evolved from analogue, wired and static communications, to 24x7 universal wireless access via internet connected mobile device. This evolution has led to greater freedoms with users able to utilise their phones as they see fit, even in oppressed nations like Iran where recent protests were reported on Twitter by Iranian mobile users faster than any international news agency could ever hope for.
